Papers

If you've been following the KonMari Method™, you've already tackled clothing and books, and now you're ready to face the paper category. While papers may be thin and seemingly harmless, they can quickly accumulate and create an overwhelming sense of clutter. As a certified KonMari consultant, I'm here to guide you through a fun and liberating process of sorting and organizing your papers, so you can focus on what truly sparks joy.

Step 1: Gather All Your Papers

Begin by gathering all your papers from every nook and cranny—files, bins, drawers, and anywhere else they might be hiding. Then, create a giant pile so you can see everything you have in one place. This visual reminder will help you realize just how much paper you've accumulated and motivate you to declutter.

Step 2: Sort Papers into Three Categories

Marie Kondo recommends sorting papers into three categories: needs attention, keep, and discard.

  1. Needs Attention: These are papers that require immediate action, such as bills that need to be paid, forms that need to be filled out, or invitations awaiting your RSVP.

  2. Keep: These are important papers that you should hold onto for reference, such as tax documents, medical records, and insurance policies.

  3. Discard: This category includes papers that are no longer necessary, such as old receipts, junk mail, expired coupons, and outdated manuals.

Remember, most papers won't spark joy (with the exception of love notes or children's drawings). You'll sort through sentimental papers later in the process, so set them aside for now.

Step 3: Ask Yourself These Questions

As you go through each paper, ask yourself the following questions to help determine where the papers should be placed:

  1. Do I need this?

  2. When was the last time I referenced this?

  3. Can I get this information online?

  4. Have I ever opened this? (For unopened envelopes, open them to see what's inside!)

Step 4: Organize and Store

Once you've decided which papers to keep, organize them into folders, binders, or a filing system that works for you. Be sure to label everything clearly, so you can easily find what you need when you need it.

Step 5: Discard Responsibly

When discarding papers, remember to recycle or shred sensitive documents to protect your personal information.

Taming your paper clutter with the KonMari Method™ can be a fun and empowering experience. By sorting, organizing, and discarding papers, you're taking control of your space and creating a more efficient and joyful environment. Keep up the great work, and get ready to tackle the next category in your decluttering journey!
